Tongue Tie (Ankyloglossia) is a condition present from birth where a short or tight band of tissue under the tongue limits its movement. This can cause problems with breastfeeding in babies, and as the child grows, it may affect speech, eating, or oral hygiene.
The exact cause isn’t clear, but it may run in families and is more common in boys. Not every tongue tie needs treatment, but when it affects daily function, a small surgical procedure called frenotomy or frenuloplasty can help.
The best age for surgery depends on symptoms:
For breastfeeding issues, the procedure can be done as early as a few weeks old.
For speech or feeding concerns, it’s ideally done between 2–5 years of age, before school-going years.
If your child shows signs of difficulty, early evaluation by a specialist is important. Plastic surgeons are trained to assess and safely correct tongue tie.
