Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) is a long-term skin condition that causes painful lumps, boils, or abscesses—usually in areas like the underarms, groin, buttocks, or under the breasts. These bumps often burst, leak pus, and can leave scars. HS is not contagious, but it tends to come back (recur) and can get worse over time if not treated.

The exact cause isn’t fully known, but it’s linked to blocked hair follicles, inflammation, and overactive sweat glands. Genetics, obesity, smoking, and hormonal changes can increase the risk. It’s more common in young adults and often runs in families.

Treatment includes medications, lifestyle changes, and sometimes surgery to remove damaged skin or prevent recurrence. Early diagnosis and proper care from a specialist can greatly reduce discomfort and flare-ups.
