Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) or, also called vacuum-assisted closure (VAC), is an advanced treatment that helps difficult or slow-healing wounds recover faster. A special dressing is placed over the wound and connected to a gentle suction device. The vacuum removes excess fluid, reduces swelling, improves blood circulation, and promotes healthy tissue growth. It also helps keep the wound clean and lowers the risk of infection. NPWT is commonly used for diabetic foot ulcers, pressure sores, traumatic injuries, surgical wounds, and certain burns.
Plastic surgeons play a key role in this therapy. They carefully assess the wound to determine whether NPWT is suitable, considering factors like size, depth, blood supply, and risk of infection. Patient selection is very important, as not all wounds or patients are appropriate for this method. Once therapy begins, the plastic surgeon monitors the wound’s healing response, adjusts the treatment plan when needed, and ensures timely transition to skin grafts or flaps if required. With proper surgical expertise, NPWT can greatly improve healing, reduce complications, and restore function and appearance.
