Syndactyly, polydactyly, duplication of digits, and constriction ring syndrome are all congenital conditions that affect the development of fingers and toes. Syndactyly is a condition where fingers or toes are fused together, while polydactyly is when an individual has extra digits.
Duplication of digits is a condition where an individual has duplicated fingers or toes.
Constriction ring syndrome is a rare condition that occurs when fibrous bands form around a developing fetus, constricting and potentially causing deformities in the affected area.
Treatment options for these conditions depend on the type and severity of the deformity, but may include surgical options such as removal or repositioning of digits or reconstruction of affected areas. Non-surgical options may include splinting or physical therapy to improve digit function. Role of plastic surgeon dealing with hand surgery is essential in the planning and timing of the surgery as it has a dynamic impact on the child’s growth and future development.
